The fighting began in April 2023. There was no anniversary coverage to speak of. Here is what the United Nations says the situation looks like now. ## The numbers, and who reported them According to OCHA, the UN's humanitarian coordination office, **more than 30 million people in Sudan need humanitarian assistance** and **more than 9 million are displaced inside the country**. Those figures were restated in a UN News briefing on 10 August 2026. In the week before that briefing, OCHA reported that **around 18,000 people were displaced from more than 20 villages** in the Sirba locality of West Darfur alone. Most of them crossed into Chad. That is one week, in one locality, in one of Sudan's eighteen states. ## The part that is a choice Displacement is what war does. The next number is what the rest of the world does. Sudan's 2026 humanitarian appeal asks for **$3 billion**. The consequence is not abstract. OCHA reported that **three health facilities in Central Darfur closed because of funding shortfalls**, cutting off **around 75,000 displaced people** from essential health services. Those clinics did not close because of fighting. They closed because the money ran out. ## Why you have heard so little Sudan is not under-covered because it is small, or brief, or ambiguous. It is one of the largest displacement crises in the world and it has been running for over three years. It is under-covered because it is expensive and dangerous to report from, because few outlets keep correspondents in the region, and because the conflict does not map onto a story that international newsrooms already have a template for. None of those are reasons the people in Sirba should be invisible.
