# Why we started VOTVS

> Whole communities go uncovered for years - not because their lives lack significance, but because nobody was sent. This is our attempt to close that gap.

There is a particular kind of silence that follows a community nobody reports on. Not the silence of people with nothing to say - the silence of no one arriving to listen.

We started VOTVS because that silence is a choice. It is made in editorial meetings, in budget lines, in the quiet calculation that a story will not travel far enough to be worth the airfare. The result is a map of the world with large sections left blank, and millions of people living inside those blank spaces.

## What we publish

VOTVS produces three kinds of work:

- **Written reporting** - long-form stories reported on the ground, with the people involved speaking for themselves.
- **Documentaries** - filmed pieces that stay with a place long enough to understand it.
- **Short dispatches** - fast, vertical video from the field, for people who find their news on a phone.

> Every story we run starts from the same question: who is affected by this, and has anybody actually asked them?

## What we will not do

We will not treat people as case studies. We will not arrive, extract a quote, and leave. We will not run a photograph of somebody's worst day without their consent, however powerful the image.

We also will not pretend to be neutral about whether these stories deserve coverage. We are not neutral about that. We are, however, rigorous about the facts inside them - and those are different commitments.

## How this is funded

VOTVS is independent and reader-funded. No corporate owner decides which stories are safe. No advertiser decides which communities are worth reaching. That model only works if enough people choose to back it, which is why you will see us ask.

If you want this work to exist, [support it](/en/support) or [subscribe to the newsletter](/en/#newsletter). Both matter more than they look.
