According to a joint statement from FAO, UNICEF and WFP covering May 2026, assistance in that month reached: - **around 1.5 million people with food parcels** - **around 700,000 people with cash assistance** - **60 per cent of children under five with nutrition support** Agencies also project that in the coming year **74,000 children will need treatment for acute malnutrition**, along with **25,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women** requiring nutrition support. **Carl Skau**, WFP's Acting Executive Director, put the fragility plainly: "There is progress on food security in Gaza, but it is fragile." ## Why this is the story There is a particular danger in a crisis that improves. Coverage is built around thresholds — famine declared, famine lifted — and attention leaves when the threshold is crossed back. But the classification moved because aid was arriving at scale. If that stops, the same analysis says the gains reverse. A population that is 67 per cent food-insecure is not a resolved story.
