VOTVS is an independent, reader-funded newsroom covering communities the
mainstream press rarely reaches: Sudan, Gaza, the West Bank, Syria, Lebanon,
Iraq, garment labour and the economics behind them. Every factual claim is
tied to a named, dated, linkable source listed at the foot of the story, and
each story carries the date its facts were last verified.

Published in English, Turkish and Arabic. Stories not yet translated appear
in English and are labelled as such.

Sport classes are set per sport, and the codes describe what a body can do in a specific stroke — not a diagnosis.

Lilies cause kidney failure.](https://votvs.com/en/articles/lilies-are-lethal-to-cats) (2026-08-20, Animals): The FDA is blunt about it: the entire plant is toxic, including the pollen and the water in the vase. Treatment delayed beyond 18 hours usually means irreversible kidney damage.

The American Heart Association says immediate CPR can double or triple survival — and you do not have to give rescue breaths for it to work.

The folk remedies people reach for make burns worse.

The polyculture produced more energy and more protein per hectare than any single crop or pairing tested.

In 2004 the world's biggest potato genebank returned hundreds of varieties to the people whose ancestors bred them.

Farmers stopped clearing the stumps already in their fields and let them come back — across millions of hectares, over roughly thirty-five years.

The ECB says in writing that its rates are not for transactions. The gap between that number and the one on your receipt is the price of the transfer.
- [A disease that infected 3.5 million people a year is down to ten cases](https://votvs.com/en/articles/guinea-worm-ten-cases) (2026-08-19, What Works): Guinea worm was everywhere in 1986. In 2025 there were ten human cases on the planet. There is no vaccine and no drug — it was pushed to the edge of extinction by filtering water and keeping a promise.

Turning it into the price of a 22-carat bracelet takes one division and one multiplication, and both numbers are published.

- [A $12 food voucher became $7. The agency says it is not a ration cut.](https://votvs.com/en/articles/rohingya-ration-tiers) (2026-08-18, Rohingya): From 1 April 2026, food assistance for 1.2 million Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh was split into tiers. Bangladesh's own refugee commissioner disagreed with the framing.
- [129 journalists were killed in 2025 — the deadliest year the CPJ has ever counted](https://votvs.com/en/articles/record-year-for-killing-journalists) (2026-08-18, Press freedom): The Committee to Protect Journalists attributes about two thirds of those deaths to the Israeli military, most of them Palestinians reporting from Gaza. It is the second record year in a row.

As of July 2026, 1.4 million people — 67 percent — remain in crisis-level food insecurity or worse.
- [The most repeated statistic about Arabs and reading appears to be made up](https://votvs.com/en/articles/arab-reading-myth) (2026-08-17, Culture): "Arabs read six minutes a year" is quoted everywhere. The foundation it is attributed to says it was never a precise figure, and UNESCO disclaimed it. The real literacy data is worse — and more useful.
